After three years of research and development, OE Utility Services is introducing its new hybrid hydrovac truck, designed, developed and built in Canada with Edison Motors and Schellvac.
Not simply a different truck. A different way to power the work.Tony Kerwin, COO, OE Utility Services
OE developed the truck with Edison Motors and Schellvac, and it uses technology that OE owns. This isn’t a regular hydrovac with a few parts swapped out. OE designed it from the ground up as a hybrid, with the truck and the hydrovac built to work as one system.
It wasn’t an off-the-shelf purchase. OE’s team helped define the problem, shape the concept and work through the engineering decisions needed to build the first truck.

Technology that supports safer, more reliable work.

Still a working truck, but with less operating noise, which matters on early starts in residential neighbourhoods.

Designed to use less fuel.

A simpler design, with fewer mechanical parts.

Most progress in hydrovac trucks has been about what the truck does at the dig. This truck changes what powers the truck and the hydrovac system in the first place.
The project brings together OE Utility Services, Edison Motors and Schellvac, and each brought essential expertise.
David Branigan, OE’s Chief Financial Officer, recommended the team read a Globe and Mail article about Edison Motors.
Engineering reviews, design choices, supplier collaboration, testing and repeated refinement.
Validate performance and reliability, and prepare the truck for field assignment.

Integrated utility infrastructure services across Ontario, built for congested corridors and the municipal work that happens in them.
Non-destructive excavation for utility verification and daylighting in congested rights-of-way.
Quality Level A field exposure and project coordination supporting subsurface utility engineering.
On-site unshrinkable concrete and flowable fill for utility backfill and road base stabilization.
Traffic plans, lane closures, flagging, and municipal coordination for work zones.
Concrete and asphalt coring, utility access coring, and surface restoration.
Excess soil management and recycling through OE’s ECA-approved central GTA facility.
This first truck is a test model. Next, it goes to work in the field, where OE will confirm its performance and reliability.
Thank you to Edison Motors, Schellvac and the OE team who helped bring it to life.
